Sunshine House Story
Sunshine House developed after humble beginnings in 1995
when Dr Gary Hewett, together with a small team travelled
to Cambodia. On seeing the nation and its people in crisis
he decided in some small way to help.
At first short-term medical teams visited Cambodia in 1996
and were followed later by full time staff to lay a foundation
to what we now know today as Sunshine House.
It was in 1999 that a team member (Lesley), reported back on
the many children who were orphaned as a result of AIDS and
left to live on the streets because their extended family,
afraid of contracting AIDS, wouldn't care for them. This led
to the inception of our first Sunshine House.
By the year 2000 land was purchased in Kompong Spue and the
first buildings were erected to make a home for children orphaned
due to the ravages of AIDS. Awareness Cambodia recognises
this situation and is committed to providing these orphans
with the necessary resources to give them hope for their future.
Through the generous donations of individuals and organizations,
Awareness Cambodia Inc has been able to build a small village
on the site, housing Khmer staff, children and a full time
volunteer nurse and her family.
We are encouraged by the progress the children are making.
It will be great to see them mature into adults, going on
to make a difference in their nation.
Sunshine House is now fully functional. It has a fully
integrated
Eco-Farm operating, with daily hands-on participation from
all children who are able. That participation ranges
from feeding the animals right through to computerised animal
management. We know this is all part of equipping our
children to stand up and make their contribution to
Cambodia's future.
